Alternative Engagements with ‘Homeland’
Sindh as an Expression of Diasporic Sindhi Identity

Abstract This paper is premised on a non-traditional understanding of the nature and role of the homeland in diaspora studies. For the Hindu Sindhis who were a religious minority and forced to flee their ancestral land of Sindh during the India-Pakistan partition of 1947, relative inaccessibility and lack of identification with the primordial homeland has meant significant detachment in the 65 years since. Sindh as purely ancestral or as the actual province in present day Pakistan therefore holds little value in their everyday lives.
