The main thesis of this paper is that while the holy trinity of Western sociologists –Durkheim, Marxand Weber – advocate the assumption of the inevitability of industrialisation and secularisation in the wake of the transition to Western modernity, this makes them see that the secularised self is represented with pessimism. In opposition to it, Eastern modernity – intended modernity in non-European societies – shows a different phenomenonand this has the consequence of differences in self-representation.
